Deep crimson purple, both the bouquet and palate command immediate attention exhibiting a near-perfect paradigm for McLaren Vale shiraz. Medium to full bodied, but without any obvious alcohol warmth it has an unbroken stream of black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate, cedary oak and fine, ripe tannins, the balance line and length reflect the very good vintage and equally good winemaking. The 20 year drinking span is nominal for the wine will undoubtedly thrive well past 2030.

Masters of sexy packaging are Wirra Wirra; the overhaul of their range is mighty impressive. Licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, exotic spices, earth, black and blue fruit. It’s full bodied, latently rich and sumptuous but backwards and closed in as a young wine. Plenty of tannin–a mix of thick ripe fruit tannin and more drying wood tannin–unresolved as yet and clamping down on the finish. It has the makings, that’s for sure, and seems a more serious and less showy (oak included) offering than previous vintages. Evolution in style here. Excellent wine. Patience required.
