What many Australian Cabernet and Merlot based wines lack, and what I crave, is that elusive and vague thing we like to call ‘minerality’, which is just one of the reasons I love Bordeaux so much. Here’s a wine with plenty of it, along with licorice, blackberry and cedar wood. It’s rich and full fruited, with positive oak, low but balanced acidity and plenty of ripe tannin to chew on. Good finish. Ooomph and, already, a pleasing sense of drinkability. Now and over the next decade it’s going to give a lot of pleasure.
