When I first judged the fortified wine classes at the Sydney Wine Show 45 years ago, I was a cork bobbing in a sea of unimaginable intensity and density of flavours. But Len Evans made it clear that the best wines had freshness in the midst of a bewildering tsunami of luscious spiced, dried fruit flavours. It has amazing freshness, length and a bright finish, rancio in high relief.

Last time I visited the Rutherglen wine show, old Mr Morris got up to receive trophies so many times that he moved his seat to the front of the auditorium, amid hoots of laughter! This wine accounted for most of the accolades, and deservedly so. ''Rare'' means more than 20 years average age but the real genius of Morris is its impeccable poise and seamless balance. This should be among the most expensive rare muscats, but it''s the cheapest. A treasure of the wine world.
