5 Star Gold Wine - 2018 Australian Wine Vintages, 31st Edition, Rob GeddesWinery of the Year - 2021 Halliday Wine Companion

Vintage 2017

Planted in 1912 and bottled on its own since 1952, this is one of Australia's hallmark single-vineyard wines. Scents of cracked pepper, licorice, mint and resinous herbs mark the nose, backed by black cherries and perhaps a bit of cassis this year, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and streamlined. Although the 2017 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz doesn't have the richness and expansiveness of the greatest vintages, it's impressive in its own way, with terrific energy, length, gentle, soft tannins and herbal complexities for days.

Deep red with a tinge of purple and a bouquet of forest-floor, autumn leaves, terracotta and balsamic herbs including a trace of mint. It's the aroma of a walk through a deep eucalypt forest on a hot day. The wine is superbly concentrated and yet supple and fleshy in texture, the tannins generous and full throughout the palate, the finish lingering long and the aftertaste dry and cleansing.
