Caipiroska cocktail

This crisp, refreshing vodka Capriosca gives you plenty of opportunities to experiment.

About the cocktail

This simple vodka cocktail is the perfect refreshment. Made with just one spirit and a few common ingredients, the Caipiroska is a great vehicle to show off your favourite premium vodka. Loads of lime gives this easy cocktail a crisp, zesty taste, while the addition of sugar syrup adds a touch of sweetness. Consider this cocktail summer in a glass!

The Caipiroska emerged as a spin on the Brazilian cocktail, the Caipirinha. Where that uses cachaça – a spicy spirit similar to rum – the Caipiroska is made with vodka. Rumour has it that when a London bar ran out of cachaça while making the Caipirinha, one of the bartenders decided to use vodka instead and, in doing so, gave it a new name: the Caipiroska. While the classic Caipirinha is still popular, its spin-off is perhaps more widely known and, these days, enjoyed all over the world.

The beauty of this easy vodka cocktail is that it is so incredibly riffable. Check out our tips below for a few ideas on how to give the Caipiroska cocktail a few delicious twists.

Dan’s top tips

The Caipiroska is the perfect cocktail to use as a foundational base for experimenting. Since many fruits pair well with lime, just pick your favourite and add it to the ingredients. Both fresh or frozen will work well, as long as they are able to be crushed easily. We particularly love adding strawberries, passionfruit – or both!

Adding herbs and even edible flowers to your Caipiroska is another great option. Mint will bring Mojito vibes, while rosemary or lavender will add a subtle, refined flavour to your cocktail. Adding some grated ginger gives it a spicy kick, and you can even swap out the sugar syrup with honey syrup to complement the ginger. The options are delicious – and endless.

When it comes to the mixing method, you could also skip the shaking and stick solely with the muddling. Here, you would place the lime wedges and sugar syrup in the bottom of your glass of choice, and gently mash with a muddler before pouring in your vodka and stirring, and adding ice. This will release even more flavour.

To achieve a similar dilution to shaking, and for a slushy-like consistency, you might like to use use crushed ice. There are a few quick ways to achieve crushed ice. If you have a blender, simply throw some ice cubes in and pulse until you have the desired consistency. Strain to get rid of any water, then store any excess back in the freezer in a bag. If you don’t have a blender handy, you can use good old elbow grease by putting ice cubes in a cocktail shaker, holding it firmly on a hard surface and using a muddler to repeatedly smash the ice until it's the right consistency.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
  1. What is in a Caipiroska cocktail?
The Caipiroska is a vodka-based cocktail that includes vodka (duh!), lime and sugar syrup.

  2. Can I customise a Caipiroska cocktail with flavors?
You can absolutely customise your Caipiroska. We’d recommend muddling fresh fruit like raspberries or blackberries. You want to muddle the fruit with the sugar syrup to extract the flavour from the fruit, then add your vodka, strain and serve.

  3. What vodka is best for a Caipiroska recipe and where can I buy it?
There’s nowhere to hide in a Caipiroska, which means you want to use high-quality vodka, so go for a top-shelf spirit. As for where to buy it? That’s easy – your local Dan Murphy’s or via the Dan Murphy’s online store.
