We’ve tested them so you don’t have to – though some of these you really should.

As a modern society, we bloody love a social media platform to tell us what’s hot. Maybe it’s the algorithm that gives us more of what we like, the prolificness of use, or the fact that it’s all based on popularity, revealing – from the inane to clever, creative to cool – exactly what we collectively are interested in. So, when something is trending on TikTok, the newest of the social media powers, it’s a good indication of what we’re going to start seeing IRL, everywhere. Food and drink fodder is some of the best content there is on TikTok, and we’ve tested six drink trends from the app to see if they’re worthy of recreation in your 2023 repertoire.
Rosé wine with jalapenos in the glass
1. Spicy rosé

Rosé has social media to thank for its secured popularity as a long-lunch drink or crowd-pleasing bottle of choice to pour with a group. What can we say, #roseallday was just too catchy to drop. Winemakers have done great and wondrous things with rosé in the past few years, but none thought to make it spicy. That came from Allyssa Marshall, or Allyssa in the Kitchen, as she’s known on her platforms. Allyssa has a lot of content about her love of jalapeños, adding them to everything, so when one of her 400,000 followers dared her to add the spicy peppers to her rosé, she did and was pleasantly surprised. “Now I can’t drink rosé without them,” she told VinePair.

The whole concept has divided the office – some yelled “Blasphemy!”, while others vibed the spicy sip. But if you’re bored, into spice, and happen to have some jalapeños and rosé lying around, it can’t hurt to try. While the “dare” prototype was made with a few slices of jalapeños chucked in her glass, Allyssa now recommends infusing the chillies into the wine ahead of drinking, straining the seeds, but keeping a few of the ribs in the glass to maintain spiciness through sipping. The overall effect is similar to a Spicy Margarita, sweet and clean with a kick.

2. Fancy ice cubes

Call it an aftermath of lockdown, but we’re all a lot better at injecting creativity and craft into the smallest parts of our life nowadays. Ice has not escaped us. While some strive for the perfect clarity and shape in their ice, TikTok is more interested in making it pretty. Glitter, fruit, flowers… it’s all being frozen, and there’s hacks a-plenty for the best ways to do it but, honestly, it’s pretty straight-forward: add small pieces of your fruit/flowers/glitter to your ice tray, fill with water not quite to the top, and freeze. The only boundary is your imagination, and there are so many ideas on TikTok, you don’t need many of your own.

This is a seriously low-stakes endeavour, so we’re here for it. Anything to add a bit of extra pizzazz to a simple Spritz is welcome at our place.

3. Corona sunriseThere was no way a pink Corona wasn’t going to go off, but over 216 million views on #coronasunrise is pretty impressive. This has the added fun of being made in the bottle. The first step is to drink to the top of the label, which already makes it a more interactive recipe than most. After that, you add a shot (30mL) of tequila, orange juice, grenadine and a slice of lime. The internet bills it as a super summery, fresh and fruity Corona – and to be honest, some of us bloody loved it, even if it felt like a bit of a guilty pleasure. If you like a Tequila Sunrise and a fruity beer, this might just be your new signature drink.

4. Themed cocktail partiesTHIS we can absolutely get around. Rather than a potluck or “bring a bottle” get-together with your mates, TikTok has inspired groups of friends to have themed cocktail nights, where everyone designs a drink inspired by a chosen topic. Some of our TikTok favourites include what you do for work, your favourite Taylor Swift song, and the ex-boyfriend you’d rather forget. Of course, the cocktail itself is key, but it's the garnishes where people’s imaginations really shine – this “Tap Water’ cocktail is high art. The best cocktails or mocktails resemble something between a diorama and a drink from the specials board at your favourite cocktail bar. So pick a theme and get creative.
Soju, Sprite and Yakult
5. Soju and YakultThis combo is already popular in South Korea, but TikTok is sending it worldwide. The basic recipe is two shots of soju to a glass of ice, a serving of Yakult (yep, the cultured yoghurt probiotic drink), and Sprite or 7-Up to fill. Some suggest adding an additional flavour, like muddled strawberries. You adjust depending on how strong (soju) or sweet (lemonade) you like it, and can swap the lemonade to soda water if you want fizz without the sweetness. What does it taste like? Citrus-y mainly, but with a creamy texture. We’re into it.
6. White Claw crafts One for the chanters of “reduce, reuse, recycle,” to celebrate: seriously impressive crafts made from leftover White Claw packaging. Why White Claw specifically? These could all be done with any brand, but White Claw is the trend right now and this is a bit like making your own White Claw merch. From reusable coasters (these are super intricate), to visors or bucket hats that would make an impact on arrival (but probably deteriorate quickly after), or perhaps flower pots, a handbag, or even an elaborate boat for your dog, grab a six-pack and don’t let anyone recycle the packaging. Or else. That’s for your craft time.
