Created in partnership with Grant Burge

Grant Burge has teamed up again with street artist KRINK, and we have six colour-matched pairings to celebrate.

We’re big fans of all things pink around here, like Margot Robbie’s empowered Barbie, Elvis’s beloved cadillac, Elle Woods’s entire wardrobe, and we can’t forget the Pink Ladies in Grease. But now there’s a new pink icon in town – the Grant Burge KRINK X Barossa Ink Limited Edition Shiraz, with its exclusive design. Forget what you think you know about shiraz because this is so much more than what you buy Dad for Father’s Day (although we know he’d love it).

In a collaboration so nice they’ve now done it twice, Grant Burge has again joined forces with New York artist Craig Costello – the brains behind artist materials brand KRINK and sick collabs with brands like Nike, Virgil Abloh and Tommy Hilfiger – with this standout release. You can’t miss the striking Grant Burge KRINK X Barossa Ink Limited Edition Shiraz on Dan Murphy’s shelves (look for the pink paint dripping down the label), and you won’t get your hands on this collector’s item anywhere else. The new wine adds to Grant Burge’s popular Ink Collection, which includes the Cabernet Sauvignon and Buttery Chardonnay, Midnight Ink Shiraz and Cabernet, and a Mid-Strength Shiraz.

If you’re newer to shiraz – or Grant Burge – you’re in for a treat. If you love a wine that plays nice with a whole range of food and you can also get behind a bottle that looks ridiculously good on the table, you’ve come to the right place. Going all in on the pink theme (we need no excuse), we have six colour-matched dish ideas to pair with this wine. But first, let’s run through some quick takeaways about shiraz and this hot new collab.

Shiraz 101Shiraz is Australia’s most famous – and most widely planted – grape variety. In fact, shiraz has never really met an Aussie wine region it didn’t like. This thick-skinned grape produces red wines on a colour spectrum of deep red to almost black. Signature flavours include peppery notes, along with luscious dark fruit flavours including blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and plum. Shiraz is also known for having a hint of choccie and the often divisive (but always delicious in the bottle) licorice. It’s long thrived in warm wine regions like Grant Burge’s own backyard of the Barossa Valley, where these wines are usually full-bodied, rich and jam-packed with fruit and spice. One of the many reasons we’re such big fans is because it’s so incredibly food friendly.
Meet the Grant Burge KRINK X Barossa Ink Limited Edition ShirazWhen you combine the artistic genius of Craig Costello with the winemaking genius of Grant Burge winemaker Craig Stansborough, you get a beautifully packaged shiraz that’s a deep, inky purple, with flavours that tick off that signature Barossa jamminess and oaky spice. Balanced? Definitely. With flavours that linger long after you finish a sip. Just what we’re after.

Pink pairings: 6 of the best dishes for Grant Burge KRINK x Barossa Ink Limited Edition Shiraz

1. Prosciutto-wrapped figs

Fancy? You bet, although a couple of figs go a long way in this dish, so you won’t have to sell a kidney to buy a handful of these plump little squishy delights. If you can’t find fresh ones, dried figs also work well. Whatever you use, cut them into pieces and wrap some prosciutto around each one (we love prosciutto di San Daniele), and you’ve got a mouthful of salty-sweet goodness. Perfect on its own, this combo will shine with the Grant Burge KRINK x Barossa Ink Limited Edition Shiraz. The wine’s rich fruit flavours will enhance the sweetness of the fig as well as that lip-smacking saltiness from the cured meat. Crunchy grissini is essential.

2. Medium-rare steakShiraz with steak is far from groundbreaking, but it is one of the true never-fail pairings. Make this duo as tasty as possible by cooking the steak to a perfect pink and tender medium-rare (sorry veggos – read on for other ideas) and ensuring the wine is at just the right temperature (we say between 15 and 18 degrees, so potentially a touch cooler than room temperature). A quality steak also needs a restaurant-worthy caramelised crust (season it well and use a very hot pan), and the wine’s complex flavours and firm structure will cut through the richness of the meat.
3. Beetroot hummusForget ordinary hummus – the inclusion of beetroot takes this dip to new heights. With its signature earthy sweetness, beetroot adds a mellow depth to hummus, not to mention that vibrant colour, and whether you’re loading it on sourdough, crackers, chopped veggies or your favourite chips, this is a very moreish starter. You could even make it the actual meal (just don’t call it ‘girl dinner’) – even more so if you complete it with a glass of the KRINK x Ink. The dark fruit flavours and spice in the shiraz will meet the creamy, earthy flavours beautifully.

4. Smoky prawnsWe can’t round up pink pairings and not include prawns. These salty-sweet shellfish are near perfect simply cooked and dunked into a sauce, so here we’d go for a traditional mayo and ketchup combo, but dialled up with a pinch of smoked paprika and cayenne pepper to work with the wine’s spiced core. Even better? Marinate uncooked prawns for an hour or two in a mix of garlic, sweet paprika, smoked paprika, a pinch of cumin and pepper, oil and a squeeze of lime, and then chargrill them quickly on the barbie for a more intense but equally delicious match.
The Grant Burge KRINK x Barossa Ink Limited Edition Shiraz with Turkish delight
5. Turkish delightTurkish delight is one of the more polarising sweets out there (just check the bottom of the Favourites box for proof). But for those of us who love it, this shiraz makes a delicious match. Whether you like your Turkish delight in pillowy, rose-scented, sugar-dusted cubes or chocolate-covered form, this pairing is as much about the plush texture of both the wine and delight as it is about the shiraz’s berry flavours amplifying the treat’s floral, red-fruit sweetness. You never know – this pairing might even convert that friend who reckons they’ll never like Turkish delight.
6. Raspberry dark chocolate If your idea of a good time is curling up on the couch with some quality chocolate, then the KRINK x Ink Shiraz is here to complete the picture. Wine and chocolate don’t always make the easiest match, but when it’s a shiraz that’s as rich, juicy and fruit-forward as this one, it’s crying out for dark chocolate flecked with raspberries to go with it. The lift of fruit sweetness from the raspberries meets the berry flavours in the wine in the best way, just as the savoury core and spice of the shiraz complement the rich, bittersweetness of the chocolate. Get your hands on some fancy choc, but in a pinch good old Fruit & Nut will do. Pink perfection.
