Less jargon, more juice – it’s time for you to taste the Decoded Wine Awards winners.
The third annual Dan Murphy’s Decoded Wine Awards are upon us! The wine awards for people who love wine and love to drink it, but don’t want to read 5,000 words on the cab franc grape health. No shade, cork dorks, just, you know, people are busy. Twelve judges sniffed, swirled and sipped more than 1,000 local drops from Australia and New Zealand (not knowing what any of them were) to pick two winners (one overall winner, one value pick) in 13 categories. These judges are, definitely, in the cork dork category, but are more likely to describe their winning Fuller Reds Over $25 as, “if an acai bowl was a grenache”, and award the Lighter Whites Under $25 for how great it would go down on a pizza night than for its lingering finish and great legs (though it’s got those too). Think of it as wine for life rather than wine for racks.
To celebrate this year’s awards, we’ve teamed up with Good Booze. Blind for an out-of-the-box wine tasting in Melbourne of the Decoded Wine Awards 2023 winners, delivered with a jargon-free, juicy wine chat – the Good Booze. Blind crew’s speciality. Under owner and creator Nathen Doyle (who also owns Carlton’s Heartattack and Vine and Sunhands), their mission is to teach the masses (even the rookies) how to taste and talk about wine. Their events and tastings feel less like a lecture theatre, more like a dinner with friends – your smart friends, but still, no one’s going to tell you to shush. And – a word of warning – they sell out bloody fast.
In the award-winning tasting line-up you can expect to experience the underdog shiraz that beat out many higher-priced drops (Grant Burge Filsell Shiraz), or the New Zealand chardonnay that will have you convinced that Kiwis are the one true chardy authority (Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay), or maybe the zesty riesling that’s a bang-on flavour match for butter-soaked clams (Pikes Traditionale Riesling). Tatebuds tingling yet?
If you’re in Melbourne, we’re inviting you to develop your palate, learn how to decipher flavours, find out what you like (so you can find more of it) and play judge at this one-time event. My Dan’s Members and their guests have exclusive early access and tickets are limited (it’s an intimate affair) so book now to avoid missing out.
