Did your fave make the cut? From Western Australia to Tasmania, these are our seven favourite local brews from across the country.

It’s easy to forget sometimes that Australia is a federation of states and territories, each with its own distinctive character and flair. We might not be as internally parochial as other federations (State of Origin notwithstanding), but we still like to get around our local icons. And none more so than our local breweries.

In honour of that spirit, we’ve pulled together a list of cracking craft beers from each state. There were a hell of a lot to choose from – turns out Australia kind of likes making beer, who knew? – but these are the seven beers getting us most excited right now. Each one represents its locale with distinction and, best of all, is available from a Dan Murphy’s located a hop, skip and jump from the brewery from whence it came.

You might not know this, but Dan’s carries a range of hyper-local product, only available in-store or online to those in that state. And in our humble opinion, fresh is best when it comes to craft beer, so it is most definitely worth thinking local when choosing your next beers in-store.

So, have a read and relish the fact that, wherever you’re based, you get exclusive access to some outstanding local brews.

Victoria: Bodriggy Utopia Pale Ale

This Melbourne brewery is turning out top-tier brews, and Utopia is a prime example. Proving that pale ales are not all created equal, Bodriggy takes this brew to the next level by dialling up those textbook fruity hop aromas to ensure you take one whiff and want to dive right in. Expect tropical, hoppy notes and a balanced bitterness. It’s approachable and thirst quenching, but with plenty of interest going on, too.

South Australia: Prancing Pony Brewery India Red Ale

If you’ve ever owned a vehicle in South Australia or been stuck behind one in traffic, you’ll recognise the moniker ‘the festival state’. So-called for its glut of arts fairs and foodie fests, South Australia’s Prancing Pony Brewery solidifies the name with the festival of flavours flowing from its India Red Ale. Thick, creamy and devastatingly full-bodied, this crimson-hued brew is bursting with fruity flavours and a dry hop aroma. The Ferarri of craft beers (get it?!).

Western Australia: Rocky Ridge Brewing Co Jindong Juicy Pale Ale

Busselton’s Rocky Ridge Brewing Co. is Australia’s first Certified Sustainable Brewery. It’s also located on a farm. Taking its name from the outcrop of ironstone that runs through the property, the WA microbrewery flies the flag for preservative-free, unpasteurised and vegan-friendly brews. Its Jindong Juicy Pale Ale is no exception. Hazy, well-balanced and sessionable as, Jindong’s defining characteristic is its eponymously juicy tropical fruit flavour. Needless to say, this beer rocks.

Tasmania: Shambles Brewery Baggy Green Session IPA

Located in an old warehouse right in the thick of Hobart, Shambles Brewery is one of the many local artisan outfits putting Tassie on the map for gastronomes everywhere. Established in 2016, their range covers the entire craft beer spectrum, and their Baggy Green Session IPA is one of the state’s best. Brewed with five types of hops for a bold, complex flavour profile, notes of passionfruit, citrus, and stonefruit give this IPA its easy-drinking quality. Howzat?

New South Wales: The Grifter Brewing Co. Pale Ale

Walk into any pub in Sydney’s Inner West and you’re sure to find the local cool cats posted up with an orange tinny in hand. The tinny in question is The Grifter Brewing Co.’s Pale Ale. Brewed just a stone’s throw away from a slew of iconic Marrickville watering holes, this light and zesty craft beer has quickly risen to icon status in its own right. Bright gold in colour and hop-forward on the finish, it’s a bona fide local legend.

ACT: Bentspoke Sprocket IPA

Beyond the goings-on atop Capital Hill, the ACT is home to a litany of exciting wine producers and craft breweries. Bentspoke Brewing is one of the standouts among them, despite only launching in 2014. If you can’t get to their much-loved brewpub in Braddon, you should absolutely seek out their Sprocket IPA. Big and hoppy, it has loads of tropical fruit aromas and flavours to enjoy. This one has even previously picked up the trophy for Best Traditional IPA at the Australian International Beer Awards. It’s a winner.

Queensland: Brouhaha Brewery Rhubarb Strawberry Sour

Rhubarb. Strawberry. Sour. Need we say more? Probably. This summery sour beer comes from Brouhaha Brewery in Queensland’s Maleny Hinterland. Located just up the mountain from the Sunshine Coast, Brouhaha’s MO is to produce high-quality beers with a deep connection to their local community. Crafted with an eye on the area’s glorious produce, this Rhubarb Strawberry Sour absolutely loves a good food pairing – and the closer to the source, the better!
