6 Indigenous-owned drinks against a pink background

These highlight releases are rich with history, heritage and a whole lot of flavour.

We’ve never had as many innovative, sustainable and downright delicious Aussie drinks as we do right now, and there’s a driving force of savvy Indigenous producers behind some of the best. Right across the country, incredible drinks are being made in countless styles and, in many cases, they’re using ingredients sourced through generations of know-how and a love for the land.

There are now so many different top-quality drinks made by First Nations producers, and they’re all worth a much closer look. So, we’ve rounded up six of our favourite beers, wine, spirits and premixes that just so happen to come from top Indigenous operators. Not all are stocked widely, so if you spot any while browsing in-store, you’ll absolutely want to snap them up.

1. Munda Wines Kaurna Country Syrah

Meaning ‘land’ in the Wirangu language, Munda Wines come from South Australia’s Kaurna Country, established by Wirangu and Kokatha man Paul Vandenbergh (who also has AFL, tuna fishing and other successes behind him), together with Damien Smith. Munda Wines are true reflections of their carefully tended sites, with their traditional name of country front and centre on the labels. In this shiraz, fruit from McLaren Vale’s Blewitt Springs delivers sandy tannins and a beautiful perfume of berries and spice. It’s loaded with blueberry, plum and dark cherry fruit flavours, and it all combines to create a captivating wine.

2. Seven Seasons Green Ant Gin

Native green ants are central to this unique gin, and they’re hand harvested in the Northern Territory by the family of the brand’s founder, former AFL player Daniel Motlop. Long consumed as bush tucker for a range of benefits, green ants also come with some pretty gin-friendly flavours. These include notes of coriander, makrut lime, citrus and lime. Together with a range of other native botanicals, they help to make this Green Ant Gin a distinctively bright, floral, herbaceous and lightly spiced gin like no other. We’re also big fans of their Seven Seasons Native Yam Vodka.

3. First Hand Beer Outback Lager

Creating a beer brand with your bestie sounds like the dream, and that’s exactly what Mark Lake-Kilpatrick and Mitch Mahon did with First Hand Beer. The cans also provide an excellent canvas for Mark’s striking artworks, with their vivid colours and traditional dots representing people of all walks of life coming together. What’s inside the tin is just as enticing, and this is a solid, refreshing lager. It has a sweet malt aroma, with crisp, balanced and mildly bitter flavours that finish full-bodied and bright.

5. Taka Gin Co. Native Fusion Gin Lemongrass & Lemon Scented Gum

Founded by Nikoya Bundle and husband Vincent Manning, Taka Gin was the first Victorian gin brand to be majority female- and Indigenous owned. The duo has vast experience working with Indigenous ingredients, and it shows in this complex gin. Lemongrass and lemon-scented gum combine with other botanicals, resulting in a fresh, tangy and citrus-driven gin.
