A busy night at Bar Planet in Sydney

Whether you’re an everyday punter or you work in hospo, these are the dates to book in for killer cocktails, masterclasses, tastings and more.

Bar workers are never averse to a good excuse for a celebration, so it’s no wonder that Sydney Bar Week, the city’s annual appreciation of all things hospitality, is bigger and badder than ever in 2023. It’s a chance for bartenders, managers and enthusiasts (yes, punters and drink connoisseurs are just as welcome) to mingle, trade ideas and, of course, drink delicious drinks. This is also the place to come if you want to be inspired to head somewhere different, learn something new, and enjoy a fine beverage at the end of proceedings.
But first, when is Sydney Bar Week?Sydney Bar Week is running from 9 to 13 September all across the city. And while a lot of the week’s events are geared towards hospo staff, everyday peeps are invited to join in the fun with a curated selection of masterclasses, tastings, parties and more. These are the four events we’re most looking forward to this year.
1. Enter the Unicoverse at Bar Planet

Date: Saturday, 9 September, 2pm–4pm

Sydney Bar Week’s opening party is an open-to-all affair, descending on one of Sydney’s most exciting bars (Bar Planet) not just for this Newtown hotspot’s already-famous Martinis, but also for a prosecco-infused cocktail journey from the folks at Unico Zelo. Expect Unico-infused Scorpinos (made famous on Bar Planet’s excellent TikTok), lashings of outstanding wine, and a tonne of great giveaways.

2. Katana Kitten X Maybe Sammy

Date: Sunday, 10 September, 9pm–late

Both Katana Kitten and Maybe Sammy should be on everyone’s bar bucket list, so when you get the chance to attend a collab between the two, you grasp it for dear life. The acclaimed Rocks cocktail bar is linking up with the NYC highball institution for a welcomed night of Japanese-inspired revelry. Suntory Spirits like Roku Gin and Haku Vodka will be flowing (in cocktail form of course), while karaoke and dancing will top off the Tokyo dive-bar vibes.

3. Mix Haus x Door Knock All Female Bar Takeover

Date: Sunday, 10 September, 9pm–late

Shining a spotlight on some of Australia’s best female bartenders, non-profit Mix Haus is teaming up with Door Knock to celebrate womxn in the industry the way they deserve. A killer all-female line-up of bartenders will be taking over the acclaimed Sydney CBD spot to further Mix Haus’s aim of fostering a sense of community and solidarity among womxn in what can sometimes be a challenging hospitality industry.

4. Next Generation Natives at Burrow Bar

Date: Monday, 11 September, 9pm–late

The use of native Aussie botanicals is a growing trend in drinks and bartending, but there are still countless frontiers of flavour yet to be fully explored. Held at Burrow Bar and hosted by Applewood/Okar, Marionette, and Yarra Falls, Next Generation Natives is set to shine a light on new ingredients and techniques, honed and perfected over thousands of years by our First Nations custodians.

Sydney Bar Week runs from 9 to 13 September, 2023, so keep an eye on the full program for all details.
