Four beers and a ginger beer – ideal for a long weekend.

Whether you’re hosting, heading away or settling in at home, these are the best beers to chill.

Guess what time it is? Long-weekend season, baby, when March slides into April with those glorious public holidays. We can practically taste the days off already. It’s a prime time to reunite with long-lost friends, assemble your selected family (sorry, aunty Bev) and boldly declare you’re “making plans” when half of them involve getting reacquainted with the couch.

And to accompany all those sweet public holidays? You’re going to need some frosty beers to share around, so we have the perfect line-up (including one rogue ginger beer) ready to go – all for excellent prices, too.

1. Balter Cerveza

This cerveza es muy deliciosa and, yes, we absolutely mean it. Crisp, easy-drinking and light on the hops, this Mexican-style lager, brewed right here in Australia, is definitely fridge-stocker material. It’s clean, refreshing and perfectly sessionable, and particularly handy for that camping trip you enthusiastically locked in last April and immediately forgot about. As it happens, this easy beer pairs seamlessly with sitting around a campfire, questionable tent set-ups, overpacked eskies (serve this guy ice-cold) and a barbie loaded with grilled meat and veg.

2. Stone & Wood Pacific Ale

If you’re a fully fledged adult, eventually you’re going to be roped into hosting a family Easter lunch. And if there isn’t a six-pack of Stone & Wood chilling in the fridge for Dad, brace yourself because chaos might hit faster than you can say “Did you see how early the hot cross buns dropped this year?” And that’s fine because Dad likes what he likes, and at least he has good taste. Chocked full of tropical fruit flavours, Stone & Wood’s Pale Ale is crisp, bright and 100% powered by Galaxy hops. Best of all? That roast lamb you’re definitely not going to burn (you’ve got this), pairs fabulously.

3. Brookvale Union Ginger Beer

Maybe your long weekend isn’t about catch-ups, Easter or squeezing in tea with every family member under the sun. Maybe it’s all about the couch. Full-on relax mode, catching up on your favourite show, and maybe with a gingery beer in hand. We’re jealous. For long weekends like that, takeaway is the only acceptable meal. And if you’ve got a ginger beer in hand, make it the Brookvale Union Ginger Beer and go for Thai. That bright, spicy kick of the ginger beer pairs perfectly with a Crying Tiger (usually grilled beef served with nam jim jaew – a zippy, spicy dipping sauce – paired with a good heaping of rice). It’s a match made in flavour heaven. Serve this ginger beer frosty, over ice, or if you’re feeling fancy, throw it into a Moscow Mule for a little extra DIY flair.

4. Hahn Ultra Zero Carb

Did you know some people actually use long weekends to… exercise? Yeah, we’re just as confused as you are. But apparently, it happens. If that’s you, first of all, power to you. Secondly, we’ve got the perfect beer that might just appeal. It’s bubbly, crisp, full-bodied and has zero carbs. Yep, once you smash your workout and refuel with a good feed, you can reach for one of these full-flavoured brews. Bike, run, roll a tyre around a footy field, whatever your thing is, and, later, enjoy one of these zero-carb beers. The added bonus is it makes that steamed chicken breast suddenly taste way better.

5. Great Northern Brewing Co. Super Crisp Lager

Want to get your heart pumping? Climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow… (pipe down, Mother Abbess). Some folks will use the long weekend to chase adventure. And if that’s your idea of a public holiday well spent, we think a Great Northern Lager can follow nicely. Crisp with some subtle but stable hops and good fruity aromas, this is just a good all-round beer. And it’s going to go perfectly with that portioned jerky you’ve got tucked away in your bum bag for when you’re done with all the action.
