An Oxford Street staple that was refreshed in 2015, The Unicorn Hotel has built a reputation as one of Sydney’s best pubs, offering god-tier grub, standout drinking and a keen eye for good times.

Ambience at The Unicorn
Why you goThere was a time when pubs meant a counter meal, a solid central bar to bend the elbow on, proper schnitzels, a good steak, a live band or some classic rock on the speakers, friendly service, and not a poker machine in sight. In many ways, The Unicorn Hotel is a throwback to these days, drawing on those time-honoured themes to present a venue that’s so different to so many of its contemporaries simply because it knows what the basics are – and it gets them so right. That means a hotel aware of Australia’s rich pub history, but with a contemporary eye, preaching inclusivity and breaking free from the blokey model of decades past. Throw in weekly trivia, a beer garden and a drinks offering that puts next-wave producers alongside retro pub classics and it’s no wonder this one-horned pony has been winning hearts since the people behind Mary’s, Young Henrys and Porteño joined forces to take it over in 2015, overseeing a refurb and blazing a path to the future. If you’ve ever had an ideal pub lurking somewhere in your mind’s eye, this is it in the flesh.
Why you stay

First, the layout. Upstairs we’re talking a double-sided central bar, handsome bottle-green booth seating and tiles, solid wooden furniture, a pool table, stage for bands, DJs and the occasional stage dive, and a sunny spot in the back with bay windows and space to spread out. Downstairs there’s a second bar and a beer garden, and throughout the venue there’s a sense of pride in its walls, shown in the framed prints of banksias, native birds (spy the black cockatoo) and pastoral landscapes, as well as the mural featuring a map of the country decorated with native wildlife.

That’s the setting, but what keeps you coming back is bar service that’s right on the money, a wine list that celebrates locals making next-wave drops, beers that are cold and balance craft and classic, and a counter menu that plays the classics better than almost anyone. Staff can stir a good Spritz as well as they can recommend adding an egg to your steak and talk you through today’s cut. Depending on the night, the mood can shift from laid-back and relaxed to full-blown disco fuelled by DJs and a dance floor that heaves into the small hours. It’s a pub for almost any occasion.

What drink to orderWine is always a good time, and the list here champions many leaders of the local, low-intervention scene – with a half an eye on pub pricing – among just a couple of internationals. Think Express Winemakers Riesling from WA’s Great Southern region by the glass, juicy chilled reds or “oxidative” wines with alluring nutty, yeasty notes, like the Double Rainbouu Fruut Luups sauvignon blanc made by Mac Forbes in the Yarra. Then you have the taps where Reschs and VB sit next to local craft brewers such as Young Henrys or Grifter. Cocktails? The Spritz comes with yuzushu, Japan’s citrus-steeped sake, while Midori brings extra interest to a nostalgic Splice-flavoured concoction made with fat-washed coconut rum, pineapple and lime. The theme? Serious flavour that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
What to pair it with

It has to be the schnitzel. Wing on, brined for juiciness, crumbed in panko breadcrumbs, and fried ultra-crisp, it’s served over buttery mash that positively drips with gravy, with a lemon cheek bringing a squeeze of acid. The best schnitty in Sydney? Don’t take their word for it – order one and check that curly parsley garnish bringing a little retro flair along for the ride.

Not a crumbed chicken day? There are a couple of fancy steaks weighing in at 300 or 600 grams, but even the daily steak is a win, with the cut – perhaps rump cap – picked for flavour first. Add an egg, pick your sauce (creamy Cognac-spiked Diane, surely) then throw in a pavlova with banana cream for dessert.

Oh, then there are the Mary’s burgers. And the French onion dip for snacks. And the pie with mash and peas. The list of good times goes on.

Pool Table at The Unicorn
Why we love itThe Unicorn is the quintessential Aussie pub made modern. There’s the pool table, the Australian touches in the decor, the local beers on tap, a killer Aussie wine list, the menu of pub classics taken up a notch. It’s everything you ever wanted in a pub, in a space that’s democratic, social and welcoming to all. Add the support for local DJs, a thirst for live music, and a no-pokies policy and it’s the model for what so many pubs could be but fail to deliver.
Regular’s tipIn true pub fashion, each day and week features events and activities made to foster a sense of community. There’s the happy hour from 4:00pm to 6:00pm daily, the $20 schnitzels on Wednesdays, the trivia from 7pm on Tuesdays, and the piano man playing singalong classics and jazzy numbers on Friday evenings. Come the weekend, expect late nights and DJs with Bistro Disco, which kicks off at 10:00pm and sees the dance floor swell, with the festivities going until very late. Just keep in mind you can always head just a few doors further down Oxford Street to Indian Home Diner for a chicken tikka kebab on the way home.
Who to takeLike any good pub, The Unicorn thrives because of its flexibility. There are the couples who come every week for a date night over a red wine and steak. There are the trivia buffs. Then there are those who break out their best moves on Saturday night and recover with late lunch on the Sunday. Bring your mum, bring your dad, book a birthday celebration out the back, or hit the happy hour when you knock off early – just make sure you invite your boss along, too.
