NOW EXPERIENCING:The Luwow

The clue is in the name – this tiki-inspired bar is a wow of a time, its flamboyant, over-the-top cocktails nailing the tropical brief in an eye-poppingly colourful and fun setting.

Ambience at The Luwow
Why you goA glowing leopard-print sign on Little Collins Street in the city gives little away. But the adjacent flight of plain black stairs is a porthole to a world of trippy tropicana. This is The Luwow, Melbourne’s ultimate tiki bar. It’s neon-lit, kitsch-cool and eye-poppingly colourful – filled with a forest of plants and bamboo, curvy lime-green booths, and tiki-style totems hand-carved by co-owner Josh Collins, or “Skipper”, as he’s called by regulars. All that makes this the kind of place that couldn’t feel vibe-less if it tried (yes, even when it’s quiet). Taking inspiration from the South Pacific – and beyond – The Luwow has held a special place in the hearts of many Melburnians since opening in Fitzroy in 2011 and relocating to the CBD in 2019. It’s intimate and inclusive, with a fiercely LGBTQIA+-friendly approach. And it seems that everyone who drinks here really leans in to the drama of it all. If a quiet in-and-out wine is you’re after, this might not be the place. And that’s part of The Luwow’s lure.
Why you stayThis over-the-top oasis is hard to top. Impossible, in some ways. Where do you progress to after the leis, lights and liveliness of The Luwow? And once you’re settled in, shoulder-to-shoulder with mates in a booth, with trays of Mai Tais being delivered by friendly-faced bar staff, why would you want to wriggle out before closing time?

What drink to orderNo cocktail says tiki quite like the mighty Mai Tai. So, naturally, the rum-spiked classic is one of The Luwow’s signatures. But you’ve got two to choose from. The classic $15 Mai Tai walks the line between sweet and sour effortlessly, nailing the pine-lime ratio, with a heady kick from a mix of Diplomático and Plantation rums. The $24 Lux Mai Tai uses fancier spirits including aged Xaymaca rum and Pierre Ferrand Dry Orange Curaçao liqueur. Treat yourself.
Regular’s tipSure, this place is a cultural melting pot, but the “patatas bravas” signs plastered throughout the bar (and bathrooms) might have you scratching your head. Why is a tiki bar spruiking a traditional Spanish tapas dish of spicy, saucy potatoes? Who knows? But as the night goes on, turn that confusion into curiosity and order a serve to soak up all the rum. They’re delicious.
Make it fancyThere’s nothing understated about anything here, least of all the cocktails, so garish garnishes come with the territory. Your drink might arrive topped with a bright cocktail umbrella, a pretty fresh flower, a split-in-half passionfruit – or all three. But you’ll find the most theatrical choices in the “Monsters for Two or More” section. Made for sharing, these cocktail bowls dial up the drama. The Voodoo Volcano is a “flaming eruption” (literally) with four kinds of rum, while the ocean-blue Easter Island Lagoon is four cocktails in one.

Who to takeOf course, it’s a hell of a place to come with a tight-knit group of friends. But because of its wild and wacky way of doing things, The Luwow breaks down barriers, making it a great place to bring a motley crew of people who might not know each other that well. Think ice-breaking work drinks, blending different friendship groups and entertaining friends of friends visiting from out of town. Any awkwardness instantly evaporates once you’ve got an outlandish oversized cocktail in your hands. Let the tiki take over.
