This quaint family-run Paddington fixture is one of Sydney’s oldest pubs, honouring the spirit of Old Blighty with a solid drinks list, old-school British fare and an incomparable degree of charm.

Why you goAs you approach The Lord Dudley, it’s highly likely you’ll do a double-take and ask yourself whether you’ve made a wrong turn and somehow wound up in the English countryside. The imposing corner building – with its handsome Tudor-style façade, red bricks and crawling ivy – looks as though it was airlifted from another time and place. And while it’s certainly a relic, having been around since 1895, it’s lost none of its appeal in its century-plus life. You don’t come to The Dudders to be seen or brush up on the latest trends; you come for the sort of atmosphere that can’t be replicated, to show your support for a breed of pub that is becoming increasingly hard to find. Long may it prosper.
Why you stay

In a city full of revamped pubs owned by conglomerates, The Dudley stands tall as something of a rarity: a family-owned institution that embraces its historic bones and maintains them impeccably. There’s just so much to feast your eyes on here: the patterns on the lovingly maintained carpet, say, or the pressed-metal ceilings, fireplaces, polished dark-timber bar and framed portraits of earls and lords from days of yore – and that’s just on the ground level.

Your wandering eye might lead you down the creaky stairs to the airy, bright greenhouse-like bistro with warm sandstone walls, or up to the stately series of rooms on level one or level two (home to the newly minted Dusty’s Whiskey Bar), which are often used for functions. No matter where you end up settling, the carefree feeling in the air and unwavering friendliness of the staff will ensure you stay put.

What drink to orderAll the boxes are ticked, with a solid line-up of spirits, no-nonsense cocktails and a well-rounded wine list that’s more extensive than it needs to be. If there’s one drink of choice here, however, it has to be beer. The 20-plus taps do a bang-up job of balancing the time-honoured likes of VB, Reschs and Guinness with on-trend offerings from new-wave breweries like Balter, Pirate Life and The Grifter Brewing Co. For an authentic draught experience, have a pint of whatever’s pouring from the hand-pump – perhaps a London porter from Badlands Brewery in Orange.
What to pair it withAll the pub staples you know and love populate the menu, from pies and parmies to steaks and fish and chips. What really sets the offering apart, however, is a focus on old-school British fare you don’t find all that often these days – think Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, or a lamb’s fry of livers with bacon. Naturally, there’s also a very fine Sunday roast, with your choice of pork or chook with potatoes, pumpkin, steamed greens, Yorkie pud and a splash of gravy.
Why we love itIt’s hard to score a bargain anywhere in Sydney nowadays, let alone in the heart of the Eastern Suburbs, but you’ll find one almost every day on The Dudley’s list of weekly specials. Think almost criminally inexpensive $9 chicken schnitzels on Monday nights, or $15 burgers on Wednesdays. And if it’s music you’re looking for, live jazz on Sunday afternoons will scratch that itch.

Don’t leave withoutThis is one of the very few bars in the city that permits you to drink on the footpath. So, go on and capitalise on that rare opportunity by joining the bankers, barristers and regulars who make merry out front every night of the week for at least one round – it’d be almost disrespectful not to.
Who to takeAnglophiles and English expats craving a taste of home will absolutely love the place and so will anyone who relishes old-timey vibes. It’s a pub for pub lovers through and through, as fit for watching some footy or cricket as it is for catching up with out-of-towners or a long lunch with the whole family.
