NOW EXPERIENCING:The Kirribilli Hotel

The perfect spot for an after-work beverage, a Saturday schooner, or a belter of a Tuesday trivia, the Kirribilli Hotel is the art-deco Milson’s Point hangout you never knew you needed.

Why you go

Recognisable by its beautiful art deco facade, the ol’ Kirribilli Hotel has been a Milson’s point staple since opening in 1937. Though the Kirribilli Hotel is positioned in quite a hoity-toity area of Sydney (and just a stone’s throw away from Australia’s favourite bridge) it is surprisingly salt-of-the-earth and a favourite of locals and passing workers.

There are multiple bars and some great dining areas in the hotel, with a lovely outdoor terrace open through summer and winter. The main bar is an old-timey wooden structure that stretches into the moss-green-carpeted dining room. As you’d expect, it’s got a solid beer list with a surprising selection of premium gin on offer as well. In terms of a pub feed, you’ve got all the classics, but slightly elevated for a fancier feel.

Why you stayThere’s a reason the Kirribilli Hotel has been such a popular watering hole for over 80 years. Is it the food? Could it be the beer selection? Maybe it’s the framed pictures of prime ministers past on the wall? Maybe. But we chalk it down to the authenticity of the pub. It has an Australiana charm that persists despite its modern touches – something lost in many of the old-pub renos you see around Sydney today. It’s because of this that you get such a varied group of customers. From your part-of-the-furniture olds to your young white-collar types knocking off from work, the Kirribilli is inclusive, genuine and just enough fun for everyone.  The Spanish influences are subtle when it comes to décor – it’s a comfortable but uncluttered, low-key space – one you’d feel happy to stumble on in any capital city around the globe. And it’s designed as well for post-work drinks with pals as it is for date nights. Perch yourself at the bar and have a yarn – these really are some of the friendliest bartenders in Brisbane. Or grab yourself a spot at the high-backed banquette for quieter D&Ms. Despite a somewhat niche- sounding proposition of ‘jamon, hip hop and sherry’, Alba appeals to a surprisingly wide cross-section of drinkers, from barristers from the nearby law courts to off-duty bartenders and industry types.

What drink to orderThere’s an impressive list of gins on the drinks list at the Kirribilli, featuring all-aussie favourites like Four Pillars and Archie Rose. But we reckon there’s nothing better than a cooling schooner of beer. Giant frosted taps pour all your regular drops, with a revolving local craft (think Grifter and Young Henry’s) on tap every month. You can drink your way through the beers they have on tap or have a squiz at their Aussie-forward wine list.
What to pair it withAll your fave pub feeds are on the menu here, but slightly bougier. So your fish ’n’ chippies come beer-battered, your schnittys are fried in panko crumbs and your steak sandwich is MB4+ graded wagyu. There are some fairly affordable items on the menu too, and a variety of salad bowls on offer, but we suggest going all out with your big-ticket items, like a scotch fillet or some juicy pork cutlets.
Regular’s tipIt wouldn’t be an Aussie pub without live music and a weekly trivia night. Make your way to the pub on a Friday or Saturday to hear classics on an acoustic guitar, or head over on a Tuesday night if you want to show off your general knowledge.
Who to takeWe rate this as a spot to stop in for an after-work bevvie with colleagues, or take your mates for a cheeky tipple on a Saturday. Bonus points for a walk across the Coathanger prior!
