The Virgin Dan Murphizz cocktail, as created for Dan's Diner at MFWF

The perfect balance of sweet and sour, there’s no booze required for this refreshing drink.

About the cocktail

If you’re missing Dan’s Diner as much as we are, then fear not! Dan Docherty (Commis) has released his favourite recipes out into the wild, for everyone to use and try at home! Stoked? We certainly are. The line-up consists of the Dan Murphizz (the alcoholic version of this drink), The Danhattan (you can tell we love a good pun), the Coffee Up, and this extremely delicious Virgin Dan Murphizz cocktail.

“I tried to focus on things that were classically American,” Dan tells us. “But incorporate the Australian ingredients, so it's a bit of a mash of modern Australian produce with that era of 1940s, 1950s America.” And what a good job he’s done – the Virgin Murphizz is pure zero-alcohol refreshment. Made from Four Pillars Bloody Bandwagon non-alcoholic gin and shaken with lemon juice and simple syrup, it’s the sweet and sour-combo that you will be returning to again and again. It’s served long over ice and soda and is the perfect drink for the sober curious, or for anyone who wants an interesting non-alc option that isn’t just juice.

We can see it being sipped at an outdoor barbecue next to some snags, a big salad with lots of fruit and some cheeky prawn cocktails. Or even just your average Wednesday night alongside that lazy takeaway pizza. Any way or time you want to sip, we promise (and so does Dan) it will not disappoint.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Add all ingredients except soda water to a cocktail shaker filled with ice
  2. Shake thoroughly
  3. Pour the soda water into a highball glass
  4. Strain cocktail mix over the soda and top with ice to fill glass
  5. Garnish with dehydrated lemon wheel and skewered maraschino cherry

Dan's top tip

The Virgin Dan Murphizz is a pretty easy drink to master, as there aren’t any tricky bits to it. However, if you want to make the best version possible, use fresh lemon juice to give it that signature zing.

Other than that, there’s not much you can screw up. But a helpful sub, if you don’t have egg whites at the ready, is to use aquafaba (the liquid in a chickpea can) or a product like Wonderfoam. You can achieve the same delicious foamy head, without cracking a shell.

Last tip, chuck your glass in the freezer so it’s nice and frosty when you pour your cocktail in.
