Sweet, sour and spicy, too. This twist on a classic is a total triple threat.

About the cocktail

  • We’ve found your new go-to cocktail crush: the Spicy Cosmo – a racy twist on the ’90s icon that’s strutting back into the spotlight, and now with some spicy takes.
  • The Cosmopolitan, affectionately known as the Cosmo, rose to prominence in the late ’80s and early ’90s. A cocktail with a history as colourful, and somewhat mysterious, as the drink itself, its exact origins are hotly debated. But the modern version that we know and sip today is typically made with vodka, Cointreau (or triple sec), cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed lime. It was Sex And The City that catapulted the OG Cosmo onto our screens (and into our glasses) as the ultimate symbol of sophistication. However, this spin-off is far edgier – it’s got rizz and modern flair with just the right amount of acidic bite, fruitiness and heat.
  • In this twist, we’ve kissed the classic Cointreau goodbye and welcomed in peach liqueur, bringing a juicy, sweet charm that levels up to the cocktail’s unexpected kick. The result? A cocktail that’s equal parts slick and sophisticated, with a flavour profile that balances sweet, sour and spicy.

Watch: How to make a Spicy Cosmo

Ingredients

  • 30mL vodka
  • 25mL peach liqueur
  • 25mL cranberry juice
  • 10mL lime juice
  • ½ barspoon hot sauce
  • Glass: old fashioned
  • Garnish: lime cheek and Tajin for the glass rim

Method

  1. Rub a lime wedge down one side of the glass and roll it in Tajin on a plate. Pop it in the freezer to chill while you mix the drink
  2. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with cubed ice
  3. Shake until outside of tin is frosty
  4. Strain into your prepped cocktail glass over ice
  5. Garnish with a lime cheek

Dan’s top tips

  • When we say bring the heat, you can always add a few spicy fresh chilli slices or get a little saucy with your fave condiments. But here, instead of relying on the unpredictability of chopped chili or jalapeño, we’ve called on our mate Frankie. A bold dash of Frank’s Hot Sauce delivers just the right amount of depth, warmth and tangy vinegar to balance the sweet and sour. And that’s what a Cosmo is all about.
  • We’ve also gone for Tajin seasoning down one side of the glass, but you could also just dip the rim of the glass in this all-important element instead for a more restrained approach. Customise it however you like.
  • Not big on vodka? Swap the base for gin to create a London Cosmopolitan. Gin not your thing? Go bold with tequila for a Rude Cosmo. Love a splash of cachaça? Shake up a Brazilian Cosmopolitan. Even if you prefer skipping the booze all together, we’ve nailed the best non-alc Cosmo recipe, too. Yep, the Cosmo’s got range.
