Take a closer look at this sweet ‘n’ salty twist on the classic coffee cocktail.

About the cocktail

It’s a big call, but the Espresso Martini may well be the darling of the modern cocktail scene. It was always bound to be a success Down Under, thanks to our famous coffee culture, and though we’re big advocates of not fixing what isn’t broken, we’ve had to change our tune now that the Salted Caramel Espresso Martini has entered our lives.

Take everything you love about the affectionately termed ‘spressy marts’ – delicious coffee flavours, premium vodka and a creamy texture – then add a dash of salted caramel syrup and voilà, you’ve got your new favourite cocktail. It’s a little sweeter than the OG Espresso Martini, but trust us, even those who claim not to have a sweet tooth will want to give it a go, with most of the sweetness being balanced by the bitterness of the espresso coffee and that subtle salty kick.

This is the perfect cocktail to kick off a party, and once your guests taste the salted caramel twist, you’ll be crowned the ultimate host. What’s not to love?

Ingredients

  • 30mL espresso coffee
  • 15mL salted caramel syrup
  • 15mL coffee liqueur
  • 45mL vodka
  • Garnish: crushed honeycomb chocolate

Method

  1. Add all ingredients, except the garnish, to a cocktail shaker
  2. Add ice, and shake
  3. Strain into a Martini glass
  4. Garnish with bits of the crushed honeycomb chocolate

Dan’s top tips

Be sure to shake your cocktail vigorously before straining it into your glass. This will give your Salted Caramel Espresso Martini that beautiful, foamy texture on top, resulting in an eye-catching cocktail ready to be shared on social media. Before you take the lid off, tap the bottom of the shaker on your bar surface and swirl it in your hand to get rid of any last bubbles (you might have seen baristas do this with frothed milk).

Don’t forget that you can make this recipe using decaf coffee too, so you won’t be up all night. And if caffeine is part of the appeal, feel free to add more coffee to the mix, but remember this can affect the cocktail’s bitterness. We recommend playing around with the amount of coffee and syrup to find your perfect balance.

You can also switch up your garnishes, opting for coffee beans instead, or even chocolate or cinnamon powder, which can be used to create some amazing latte art, should a creative streak strrike. There are some great examples to be found online, but there’s nothing better – in our humble opinion – than a classic love heart.
