The Old Friend cocktail is an approachable way to get a taste for Campari

Tart, complex and bittersweet. Could this be your new go-to cocktail?

About the cocktail

Floral, slightly bitter and tart, and with an undercurrent of lilting sweetness for balance, the Old Friend is a classic aperitif you’ll want to get chummy with.

Similar to a Negroni, but with a sweeter side, the Old Friend cocktail is not to be confused with its distant cousin, the Old Pal, which is whisky based, with Campari, dry vermouth and a lemon twist. Adapted from a recipe created by Jim Meehan in 2012 at Chefs Club Aspen in Colorado, the Old Friend introduces elderflower and grapefruit juice in the place of vermouth, with a base of gin rather than whisky. One of the more approachable Campari cocktails around, if you feel like a jaunt into the Campari camp, this is the guy to buddy up with.

Gin, the backbone of the cocktail, gives botanical qualities, balanced by a tropical zippy acidity from the grapefruit juice. Elderflower adds sweetness and a floral edge, and Campari brings a hint of bitterness, but without overpowering. Its alluring and Instagram-worthy bright pink appearance doesn’t hurt matters either. All in all, the Old Friend is a classically styled cocktail you’ll want to share with your mates, new and old.

Dan’s top tips

According to Jim Meehan, Beefeater or London gins are a great option for the Old Friend cocktail, but most dry gins will work well. Likewise, pink grapefruit is our top preference (and also perfectly matches the blush colour of this beauty), but white, yellow or ruby red grapefruit will do nicely, too. Just be sure to adjust the balance based on the bitterness, sweetness and acidity of your chosen grapefruit.

If elderflower is a little too floral or funky for you, feel free to dial it down to suit your tastes. You could even nix it all together, similar to a Dieci e Lode cocktail that consists of gin, grapefruit juice, Campari and a wedge of lime for garnish.

On the flip side, if florals are your thing, why not add a little more elderflower or even swap out your dry gin for a more herbaceous option? You could also choose an infused gin with floral or citrus notes, or even a grapefruit-based gin to really lean into the zesty, bitter notes and make your old mate even zingier.
