The fabulous gals from Shameless blessed us with this Spicy Marg recipe – because who doesn’t love a Spicy Marg?

About the cocktail

It’s fair to say that podcast queens Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews have their fingers on the pulse. They’re the mega brains behind Shameless, which, in their own words, is “the podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff.” We’re talking an up-to-the-minute, academic analysis of celebrity gossip, trash TV, and more. Oh, and did we mention that it’s roaringly hilarious?

When they aren’t diving into the day’s top pop-cultural curiosities or enjoying a knock-off drop at their local watering hole (Richmond’s plushest pub: Union House), they do regular stuff like fantasising about the ultimate celebrity cocktail party. And that’s precisely what they were plotting when we shamelessly hit them up for a cocktail collab.

So, who gets an invite? Kim Kardashian. “Obviously.” Rhianna. “An icon.” Steve Carell. “Someone has to keep us on our toes!” It’s an all-star cast, but what do these Hollywood royals have in common? What would Steve do while Kim and Riri compared Drake’s fire emoji story replies? Maybe he’d have some of his own to share? “God knows what we’d all talk about, but surely they’d all love a Spicy Marg.” Who doesn’t!

And so, the Shameless Spicy Marg was born. A riff on the cocktail du jour, Zara and Michelle’s take on this timeless tipple turns the spice up to 11. Featuring fresh lime, Tabasco sauce, orange liqueur (AKA triple sec) and tequila, trust us when we say this drink belongs at the top of the guest list.

You don’t need our permission to get in touch with your trashy side – you’re all big boys and girls – but you do need a Shameless Spicy Marg if you’re gonna do it properly.

Ingredients

  • Lime wedge
  • 3 dashes Tabasco hot sauce
  • 5mL sugar syrup
  • 25mL lime juice
  • 20mL triple sec
  • 50mL reposado tequila
  • Garnish: lime and chilli salt for the glass rim

Method

  1. Rub the lime wedge all the way around the rim of your margarita glass to act as the glue for your chilli salt
  2. Pour some chilli salt (or make a mix of regular salt and chilli flakes) onto a plate, then evenly dip your glass into the mixture to coat the rim. Set your beautifully rimmed glass aside
  3. Add all other ingredients to a cocktail shaker, along with a healthy handful of ice
  4. Shake your cocktail, and then strain it into your prepared glass over fresh ice

Zara and Michelle’s top tips

The ladies recommend using reposado tequila here, but blanco will work as well. Reposado is a little more premium, having been aged in oak barrels for two to 12 months, and will give you a smoother taste. Just don’t use añejo tequila – that stuff’s too good to mix!

Next, don’t be scared to use hot sauce. It’s a one-way ticket to spice city and saves you from chopping chillies or fishing jalapeños out of the jar. But beyond the practicalities, this drink deserves the right vibe. We’re talking about food and music.

Serve your Shameless Spicy Margs alongside a DIY taco table. Corn tortillas, baked white fish, marinated steak and plenty of guac should do it. And don’t forget to make a playlist. Zara and Michelle recommend something “equal parts basic and wonderful.” ‘Despacito’, anyone?
