Because bright blue, nostalgic drinks just taste better.
About the cocktail
Cocktail bars give us license to get a little ostentatious. Between all the tiny umbrellas, spiralling lemon twists, tiki glasses and those meal-on-a-stick Bloody Mary garnishes, half the fun of a cocktail bar is the presentation. And, sure, those cocktail pros have plenty of skills, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pull out a few tricks at home – as you’ll see with this marbled-blue Electric Vodka Lemonade. The Electric Vodka Lemonade is a simple blend – just vodka, lemon juice, sugar syrup, lemonade and blue curacao. The flavour is much like you’d expect, too – like an extra-zingy lemonade. But it’s the addition of blue curacao that gives this cocktail its fun edge. Blue curacao is a liqueur flavoured with the peel of a citrus called curacao and then dyed blue. Here, a gentle drizzle adds an eye-catching marble effect that is a whole lot of fun – and it really makes this one stand out from your average boozy lemonade. That little pop of blue makes the Electric Vodka Lemonade a fun option for entertaining – everyone will be impressed at your expert mixology. The fact that this is essentially a fancied-up alcoholic lemonade means you already know when to serve it: backyard parties, party season drinks, summer barbecues – you know the drill.
Ingredients
40mL vodka 25mL lemon juice 10mL sugar syrup 75mL lemonade 10mL blue curacao Garnish: lemon peel Glass: highball
Method
Add vodka, lemon juice and sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker Add three ice cubes and shake until you can’t hear the ice rattling Pour into a glass, fill with fresh ice, top with lemonade and give it a brief stir Gently drizzle the blue curacao over the top of the drink for a marbled effect Garnish with lemon peel – we cut ours into the shape of a lightning bolt
Dan’s top tips
The key to getting the Electric Vodka Lemonade right is, of course, that blue curacao. If you want to get that striking, marbled blue effect, you’ll need to pour the curacao in slowly. Once you’ve added your other ingredients to the glass, drizzle the curacao gently over the drink until you get those marbled strands throughout. Take your time here or you’ll end up just colouring the whole thing blue (also not a bad result). Another thing to keep in mind is your choice of lemonade. Our cocktail experts used Sprite in this recipe, but you can go for any lemonade you like. Just keep in mind that clear lemonades like Sprite will allow the blue colour of the curacao to really shine, as opposed to cloudy lemonades or squash, but experiment away. As for that shake with just three ice cubes, this is the whip-shake technique (sometimes with just one cube) to gently aerate, chill and dilute a cocktail in the shaker. You’ll often see it in long cocktails that end up diluted with a mixer like soda. Just shake hard until those cubes stop clinking and you’re all set.
