Bringing all the zippy, bright and bubbly vibes, this might just be the ultimate Spritz for a crowd.
About the cocktail
You might be hosting Christmas this year (congrats – you’ve got this!) or maybe you’re on drinks duties at someone else’s place. Either way, you need to pull something fabulous out of the bag. That means having at least one never-fail recipe you can prep well ahead that nails the summery, festive, fruity brief. Luckily, this Cranberry Limoncello Spritz Jug has arrived. Consider this your hosting cheat code – big on flavour, low on effort, and guaranteed to make you look like you have your life together. Super fresh and bright, this cocktail is a big winner if you don’t have the patience for fancy bartending tricks – just a little prep ahead of time to freeze your fruit and make the cranberry syrup (it’s so easy it barely counts). It’s simple to make for a group, and will work just as well on Christmas Day as it will for every other catch-up year-round. This recipe makes enough for seven to 10 people, depending on your pours. And the best bit? Made from limoncello, prosecco, cranberry juice and soda, one bottle of each will make several batches, so this is giving serious bang for buck. We think that might just nudge it over the line as the ultimate Christmas cocktail.
Ingredients
1 lemon 1 orange 120mL cranberry juice 45mL caster sugar 300mL limoncello 360mL chilled prosecco 180mL chilled soda water Glass: jug or punch bowl, wine glasses to serve Garnish: 2 lemons, cut into wheels
Method
The day before, slice 1 lemon and 1 orange into wheels, layer them in a small round container, then fill with water and pop in the freezer (this will become the ice for your jug) Make the cranberry syrup by stirring sugar into cranberry juice until fully combined When ready to make the Spritz, remove the frozen fruit block from the container and carefully slice into chunks with a serrated knife, then add to your jug or punch bowl Pour the cranberry syrup over the ice, then slowly add the soda and prosecco, being careful not to knock out too much fizz (see tips below) Finally, add the limoncello, stirring gently from the bottom to the top Fill your glasses with fresh cubed ice, and carefully pour the drink into the glass, or use a ladle if serving from a punch bowl Garnish with lemon wheels
Dan’s top tips
A little prep goes a long way in this recipe. It won’t take long, but slicing and freezing your fruit ahead of time is the best way to keep the drink cold in the jug without overdiluting it. Clever!
We also think it’s worth prepping your cranberry syrup at the same time to keep you out of the kitchen and super organised on the day. Just be sure to make double, or even triple, as people are absolutely going to want another glass of this Spritz. The mix will keep in the fridge until you’re ready to serve, and your future frazzled hosting self will thank you. Finally, if you’re worried about pouring in all that prosecco and soda and losing their bubbly goodness, one hot tip is to pour both down a long spoon into the jug. A bar spoon is perfect, or you could pinch a serving spoon off the table. This will ensure you’re left with the best possible fizzy results because no one likes a Spritz without the spritz.
