Japanese beer giant Kirin produces this stunning whisky. First launched in early 2016, it is a blended whisky including medium and heavy grains, mixed with a peated malt whisky. Kirin’s Chief Blender, Jota Tanaka, wanted this to be the first widely available entry level Japanese whisky to be bottled without chillfiltration, and so it is, bottled at a warming 50% ABV.
The whisky’s name translates as “at the foot of Mount Fuji”, and it is here it is produced, at the Fjui Gotemba distillery which was first opened in 1973, and is little known beyond Japan. The distillery’s outstanding location is featured on the label, and this whisky is produced using rain and snow melt from the top of the iconic mountain itself.
Fuji Sanroku was matured in former Bourbon American oak barrels, giving it a delicate toffee and spice flavour which pairs perfectly with this dram’s faint smoke.
Nose: Toffee, pineapple, passion fruit, apricot jam.
Palate: Orange, rye spice, nutmeg, cloves, apricot jam, pineapple, wood shavings, passion fruit.
Finish: Very well controlled wood. Rye spice, smooth bourbon, passion fruit, pineapple and jam.
