About this product

The “Icon” series of wines are crafted only in the best years when a tiny selection of barrels stands out from the crowd. These barrels have an intensity and purity that deserve to be bottled as a limited run. Generally different winemaking techniques (fermentation in small oak fermenters) or small parcels of grapes are picked and matured separately with the intention of becoming a special bottling under the “Icon” banner.
Vintage Conditions: 2017 vintage was set by a near perfect growing season with a long-awaited wet winter with rainfall well above the long-term average. With one of the wettest spring seasons on record, minimised the risk of frost damage. Cooler than average spring and summer temperatures ensured a long, slow growing season allowed intense flavour development and retention of natural grape acidity. Harvest was two weeks later than normal as a result of late January and early February rainfall.
Vineyard Selection: Each vintage, the best sections of the Hemera Estate Shiraz vineyards and our trusted local growers are selected as having the power and intensity to be considered worthy of the ‘JDR’ label.
Winemaking: Once the grapes have been identified to be of optimum maturation and flavour ripeness, the parcels are brought into the winery where they are destemmed and crushed into the open top fermenters. Manual pump overs are conducted twice daily to provide extraction of colour, flavour and tannins. Towards the end of fermentation, the wine is drained and then pressed to a combination 100% new French and American oak barrels for 17 months maturation. Careful barrel selection takes place before the wine is blended. The wine is neither fined, nor filtered.
Tasting Evaluation:Colour: Dark core with garnet rim.
Aroma: Perfumed aroma of blueberry, black cherry and violet florals. Subtle oak derived vanilla and coconut aromas, with freshly ground roasted Columbian coffee beans.
Palate: Dense fruit flavours of red plum, raspberry, framed by fine grain cedar oak tannins. Complex flavours of sarsaparilla, and cola with a touch of sweet soy. 100% new oak is fully absorbed in the fruit core. Fine interwoven fruit acid draws focus to the back of the mouth with a long, lingering finish. A wine with incredible drinkability in its youth, but the ability to cellar for many decades to come.
