Situated at the north-eastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, Marlborough is a region of great diversity. The landscape and climate vary enormously, from temperate rainforest and mountain ranges to arid river plains and windswept coasts. The region's early economy was reliant on harvesting flax, moving to more traditional pastoral farming until the early 1970s when the first commercial vineyards were planted. In the 1980s Marlborough first attracted the wine world's attention for its Sauvignon Blanc, and today, it is one of the largest and most important wine regions in the Southern Hemisphere. Sauvignon Blanc still commands the brightest spotlight but many other varieties are now thriving there, particularly Riesling and Pinot Noir. Fierte (French for 'pride') was first introduced with the 1997 vintage. It has been a regular award-winning brand with medals from some of New Zealand's best known wine shows, such as the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards and the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Fierte wines are made from carefully selected parcels by Trophy-winning winemaker, Sally Blackwell. Sally crafts wines which exhibit the unique characteristics for which New Zealand is famous the world over.
