Coonawarra holds the pre-eminent position as one of Australia's greatest red wine regions, boasting the most celebrated vineyard soil in Australia, known as terra rossa, a distinctive, albeit thin, band of vivid red soil overlying a bed of soft limestone. Though its Cabernet is more well-known, connoisseurs regularly seek out its stunning Shiraz as well.
