Old bushvines planted in 1857 prove they still have the X-factor. One batch of fruit destemmed and popped into a ceramic egg on skins for several months (not specified) then into used puncheons; the second batch, whole-bunch fermented in used puncheons. Happy to report this is a sterling drink. It has poise, incredibly velvety tannins, a suppleness and beautiful fruit, which is the very heart of this wine.

Deeper, darker, slightly less purple-tinted colour, the bouquet fusty and slightly foresty, plums and herbs, the palate soft and rounded, medium to full-bodied and balanced. Lacks definition. The finish has a determined grip and a trace of bitterness, with a hint of astringency, but it would work better with food. A big, solid wine. (Hand picked from the 1858-planted Stonegarden vineyard; some was fermented in a ceramic egg; some was partly whole-bunch fermented)
