Levantine HillGlen Garvald Viognier 2020
About this product
This inaugural release of stand-alone Viognier under the Glen Garvald banner takes its lead from the headily perfumed, viscous and mouth-filling Viognier styles of its home ground in Condrieu in France’s Rhône Valley. This wine fully embraces the variety and its myriad intrinsic quirks, allowing it to express, unfettered and uncluttered, its innate qualities without resorting to the usual New World desire for (some might say misguided or misinterpreted) amelioration of white wines to fit them into a box of ‘correctness’.
An intense rousing perfume rises out of the glass, conveying aromas of ginger-snap biscuit, peach blossom, lemon verbena, spiced quince, cardamom cream, and wet granite.
Its luscious and unctuous palate combines the signature varietal textural elements of grape skin-derived phenolics and glycerol, reverberating with persistent sumptuous flavours. Cardamom and ginger echo their aromas on the palate in concert with glazed pastry, cloves, grapefruit, pistachio, lemon meringue, guava and jasmine tea flavours contributing a feel of fine-grained phenolics to the finish which help draw the focus of the wine right to the back. Intense, viscous and voluminous, the subtle integrated natural acidity and phenolic line of fine tannin carries the flavours from front of the well-rounded palate to a resounding finish.
Best served at 8-10°C in a Riedel ‘Old World Syrah’-shape glass.
An unparalleled match for aromatic spicy Asian and Middle Eastern dishes.
