Helen & Joey EstateAlena Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2017
About this product
The restraint on this wine suggests it will continue to age and improve in bottle. Our Alena wines are designed to be drunk with some age on them but if you can’t wait, enjoy the 2016 Alena Chardonnay with skewers of Parmesan cheese and pear.
The 2017 Alena Chardonnay was hand harvested on 18 February. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and the free run and pressings separated until final blending. After chilling, 100% of the unsettled juice was placed in 500 litre puncheons and 228 litre barriques for fermentation by wild yeast. The fermentation was long and slow, taking almost 2 ½ weeks to complete. At the end of fermentation, the wine was left on yeast lees for 9 months with weekly stirring to develop a creamy, texture palate. The wine was blended and bottled in January 2018.

Whole-bunch pressed, wild yeast fermentation, on lees for 9 months in oak puncheons and barriques with monthly lees stirring. Still super tight and wound up; it hints at creamed honey and nougat, lemon juice and a piercing line of acidity. Give this time.

There's plenty to enjoy in this vibrant Yarra Valley white. Tight minerality and a steely spine, infused with grapefruit notes and enriched by toasty oak, nougat and almond meal complexity. This is drinking very well now but has the inner strength and structure to improve further.
