Clarendon HillsAustralis Syrah McLaren Vale 2012
About this product
The Astralis vineyard is a due East aspect with approximately a 20-30% degree incline, catching the cool morning sun and is then shielded by the hot afternoon summer sun. The soil is composed of loamy sands with quartz, ironstone and shale spread throughout the site. The Astralis Syrah upon release in 1994 was Australia’s first ever bottle of red wine priced at $100. Astralis is now considered an Australian icon of the fine wine world. It is one of the highest scoring and consistently high scoring wines in the world and the wine features in countless Michelin starred restaurants across the world, in many Airlines First Class wine service menus. Clarendon Hills Astralis features in the highly exclusive Exceptional category of classification by Langtons.
‘The lyrical and beautiful Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah is a highly complex and well concentrated wine with dark liquorice, blackberry, mocha aromas and touches of chamomile, earthy, bitumen, herb garden notes. It is a changing kaleidoscope of aromas and flavours with dry, slinky tannins, plenty of fruit richness and underlying savoury oak. With age the wine develops paneforte, dark chocolate, cedar, spicy aromas and superb chocolaty texture’

‘The price is stratospheric but so too the quality. This mounts a watertight case. Voluminous fruit, dense in colour and concentration, large bones of supporting tannin and a resounding finish. Such super-sweet concentration isn't for everyone but when it's done like this it creates a universe for you to immerse yourself in; it's as all-encompassing as it is compelling.’ James Halliday 98 points, Wine Companion.

‘Medium to deep garnet/purple, the 2012 Astralis (Shiraz) starts off with complex, meaty and earthy aromas wafting around a core of blackberry preserves, preserved plums, and mulberries with hints of licorice, Chinese five spice and potpourri. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the multi-layered flavors have very spicy accents and are framed by ripe, grainy tannins. It has a very long and elegant finish with hints of exotic spices.’ 98+/100 RP Wine Advocate.
