ShadowfaxLittle Hampton Macedon Range Pinot Noir 2020
About this product
The Macedon Ranges is the coolest region on the Australian mainland, and Shadowfax is one of the producers leading the way in maximising its potential. Shadowfax's vineyard at Little Hampton near Trentham sits at 720m above sea level and is one of the coolest in the Macedon Ranges.
Floral violets and rose petal waft from the glass, bolstered by blueberry and raspberry fruits. Further complexities reveal themselves, such as cinnamon, cherry sap and sarsaparilla. Given time in the glass, the Little Hampton’s signature aromatics intensify with fine and lacy tannins. The wine has energy and lift that can only be seen in high altitude, cool climate Pinot Noir.

Hand-picked fruit carefully sorted and destemmed so 100% whole berries in small open fermenters, wild fermentation with daily plunging, 14 days on skins, pressed to used French hogsheads. A beautifully detailed and harmonious palate with spice, rose petal and cedar run through to a stunningly long finish and aftertaste.

It’s a cranberried wine. Washy. Spicy too, gently autumnal, smoky, fleshed with red cherries, just a little reductive. A pinch of this and a pinch of that. It carries dry, chalky tannin; it’s strung on a taut line of acidity; it’s measured out in coffee spoons. Both delicacy and perfume are evident. Time will be kind.
