“The Balnaves family, Coonawarra and Cabernet Sauvignon are concentric circles, indivisible from one another,” declares James Halliday. So true: Doug Balnaves and children Kirsty and Pete are Coonawarra to the core. Doug first planted vines in the heart of their hometown Penola, home of the famous Terra Rossa strip in 1976. Former Qantas Winemaker of the Year Peter Bissell, who led Balnaves to the title of James Halliday Winery of the Year in 2008, crafted this vibrant, drink-young wine. This is first in a series of experimental wines to be released by Balnaves, hence the “1” on the label. This series shows how the family continues to break new ground with great wines in Coonawarra.
