PenfoldsThe Max Schubert Cabernet Shiraz 2012
About this product
The Max Schubert Cabernet Shiraz is testament to Penfolds' winemaking philosophy and the art of multi-regional blending. A wine with great complexity and length, which combines the intense red fruits with leathery oak and savoury tannins. This Penfolds will drink beautifully now yet it also has the structure for careful cellaring. The 2012 is the innaugural vintage of this wine and there were less than 500 cases of this wine made.

Wow. A 61/39% blend of Barossa shiraz and Coonawarra cabernet led to 1962 Bin 60A, Max Schubert's single greatest wine. This inherits Bin 60A's regional and varietal blend, its extreme longevity and impeccable balance between fruit, oak and tannins. All it needs is lots of time.

This brand new Penfolds label pays homage to Grange founder, Max Schubert. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 The Max Schubert Cabernet / Shiraz offers a slowly evolving, complex nose with baked berry, cassis and cedar notes over spice box and earth hints. Medium-bodied with a rock-solid foundation of grainy tannins and refreshing acidity, the muscular fruit is densely packed at this youthful stage, leading to a long if somewhat restrained finish. This is a very promising wine, though I ve played my score on the conservative side.
