More serious, concentrated and savoury than its sibling - The Riparosso. There are few red wines in the world that offer as much drinking pleasure on a cold Melbourne saturday night for so little money as the 2015 Illuminati 'ILICO' Montepulciano (Abruzzo ITALY). The concentration of fruit, natural acidity and superbly balanced fine tannin frame are both sophisticated and sublime. Would be superb with a duck ragout pappardelle pasta or just a lovely chargrilled rib-eye and mushrooms. All you need to know about the grape Montepulciano (or Monty) is that it is fleshy and and satisfyingly grippy. The Adriatic coastal region of Abruzzo supplying the trattorias of Rome since the days of the Roman Empire.

More serious and savoury. Roasted chestnuts, meaty, gravy lamb, Cabernet-like tannin structure, grippy. Love this, which eschews the brightness of the Riparosso in favour of some hefty gravitas.
