The 2001 is exquisitely pure, riddled with saturated cherry-plum fruit, lasciviously-but-appropriately oaked, gored by five-spice complexity, liqueurous and yet controlled, blessed by muscular tannins that spread out on the finish (if a little chunkily now, but which will no doubt sort themselves out in time) and concentrated in both its fruit and in its charm. This is a great wine, even at the price, with a pronounced drinkability – even at the very start of its life.

Deeply coloured; rich and plush, perfectly ripened blackberry fruit; exemplary oak handling and tannin management; great length.
