84% shiraz, 16% cabernet sauvignon, open-fermented, matured for 16 months in 100% new hogsheads (92% French, 8% American). The colour is typically deep, the bouquet complex, as is the palate (no surprise), but doesn't hit you with its alcohol (most surprising of all). It's hard to imagine the French oak could be the answer. Regardless, the black fruits (berry and currant) hold sway until the finish, when the alcohol does raise its head. I'm happy to accept that, but would choose my beef steak with care (5cm thick).

Glaetzer’s Anaperenna is an unfiltered Barossa blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon that has always embraced its own excess. This 15.5% alc whopper sure does that but, against the odds of its own numbers, it does so in a sure-footed way. Yes this is warm and rich but it’s fluid, juicy even, and the fruit itself maintains a freshness. You have to give it kudos for that. Asphalt, saltbush, redcurrant and even boysenberry characters are at play here, woodsmoke and fresh-roasted nut notes in minor evidence only. It’s sweet and it’s fruit driven. It pushes confidently out through the finish. It makes a good case for the bigger style.
