Dry, Full Bodied style of ShirazThe heritage-listed 5.24 hectare “monopole” Penfolds Magill Estate is one of the few single vineyards in the world located within city boundaries. Its legacy as the “Grange Vineyard”, ensures its place in Australian wine history. This “soft of nature, yet structured and substantial” wine is distinctly different to the mainstream Penfolds style, showing intense floral, blackberry, aniseed aromas, smooth richness and a "long spine without being overtly firm." Magill Estate Shiraz is batch-vinified in open wax-lined concrete tanks. After completion of fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of new French and seasoned French and American oak for between 12-15 months.

Full bodied red wines have a noticeably textural mouthfeel with bold, complex flavours. Often deeply coloured.
Dry wines have no trace of sweetness at all.

It’s quite a beautiful release in its style. Beautiful fruit, safe in a blanket of musky, coffeed, creamy oak. As it breathes, the oak settles nicely into the wine. Balance once again is a key here. Juicy acidity, pure clean plummy fruit, firm smoky tannin. Silken through the mid palate then grainy through the finish. Medium in weight but it feels concentrated in its fruit/flavour profile. I like the direction Magill Estate is heading; it’s true to its history style-wise but its slowly becoming more about fruit than oak.
