Chapel Hill’s Mourvedre has never looked better. The 2021 vintage was very kind indeed to this variety. Long and warm conditions allowed the sweet fruit to ripen perfectly, the aromatics being a standout. Aromas of deep red rose petals (Mister Lincoln for all you rose growers) provide an enticing entree. The wine is supple and seamless with an effortlessness brought by nature at its kindest. Lightly spiced black cherry and smoky black tea, along with a charcuterie note and deft oak hints are all in the mix. This is such a pleasure to drink.

I love this variety, so much of which was forlornly dug up during the misbegotten vine-pull scheme. Initially closed, needing a work-out in the glass. Firm. Savoury. Ferrous and powerful. Think a loamy stream of dark-fruit aspersions, dried tobacco leaf, licorice and bitter root spice. The acidity is a bit clangy. Solid, but would be better served with a bit more tannin and less acid.
