Cassis, chocolate and raspberry fruit aromas and flavours fill a wine with excellent structure, weight, texture and balance; a long lingering fruit-driven finish shows the deft use of oak.

A brilliantly structured and flavoured wine, miles away from the brooding blockbuster mould but set to age excellently over the medium to long term. There’s sweet resiny oak here, and it’s prominent, but there’s a savouriness too, with a complex mix of dried herbs and licorice, raspberry and cassis flavours all showing themselves as the wine moves through your mouth. Tannins are firm but ripe – and there’s an impressive juicy acidity to it. An excellent follow-up to the terrific 1998.
