Dry, Light Bodied style of Pinot NoirAny lover of Australian Pinot should taste William Downie’s evocative expressions. Made in Baw Baw Shire, in the heart of West Gippsland, his Bull Swamp Pinot Noir is made of fruit grown in volcanic soils back in 1981. There’s character in the grapes — picked from three very particular parcels — that expresses itself with beauty in this wine from one of our Pinot masters. This isn’t a light Pinot by any means. Medium to full bodied, it’s impressively structured with aromas of red cherry, juicy vine fruits, and a lick of red berries freshness. That volcanic earth comes through, too, with noticeable mineralogy, alongside savoury notes of rosemary and thyme.

Light bodied red wines have a water-light mouthfeel and light flavour impact. Often pale to light/medium in colour.
Dry wines have no trace of sweetness at all.

A dry-grown vineyard with fruit from four distinct parcels making up the wine – another excellent offering and another year of low yields. It’s finely tuned with precise acidity and silky tannins, although there’s definition and shape, too. Expect heady aromas all floral and spicy, a mix of red cherries and Middle Eastern spices, including sumac with some chinotto/blood orange tanginess. It’s very much in its primary phase, and as delicious as this is now, more bottle age will reap rewards.
