The "Seventy Six" Koonunga Hill sits some way above the rest of the Koonunga range in terms of quality, and most definitely in the "value for money" stakes. It has style and substance that belies its humble price. There's extra dimension and complexity - unexpected, but very welcome. Coonawarra cabernet, although only 12% of the blend, exerts a positive influence on both nose and palate. The high grade fruit has also had a portion of new oak thrown at it. That's a good sign! The nose shows a red and black fruit assortment, vanilla pod and nutty notes. The rich palate is all about damson, blueberries and cassis, with a light wash of earthy chocolate, tobacco and palate lifting "shiraz pepper". Supefine silty tannins round it all out. You won't be disappointed.
