The family Grenache block on Thiele Road in Bethany are one of the old vines planted in the 40's and still producing fantastic fruit today. Schwarz has dark inky purple colour with a great aromas of sour cherry, ripe dark fruits and a hint of fresh raspberry on the nose. Although not fruit driven, the red fruits characters are lifted with some earthy oak undertone on the palate. Hint of fresh spices with some subtle tannin towards a rather long finish. A bold wine with a difference.

Medium bodied red wines have a lightly textured mouthfeel with moderate flavour impact. Often medium in colour.

Lubricated with 20% whole-cluster spike across the first pick and 15% the second, this mid to full weighted Grenache was wild-fermented across pump-overs early and foot stomped later to attenuate the fermentation before transitioning to small tanks and French puncheons. I want to like this more than I do. Structure is achieved to acclaim, however Grenache's hedonism is too subdued. Where's the kirsch?
