Pedra Pale takes its name from Pedra Branca, which passionate topographers would well know is more rock than the island and is one of only two places in Australia with a name of Portuguese origin. In a surprising turn of events, however, that name doesn’t stem from Portugal but from the South China Sea, where another Pedra Branca sits, its the translation meaning "white rock".
