Gosh, this is good. GW said for the 2004 that wood was the forte, and again it is here, but as sweet and beautiful as a vessel interfering with grapes can be. Dense perfume of nougat, cedar, vanilla and malt. To taste, succulent fruit, so youthful now, deep and dense, spicy and utterly seductive in sheets of satin-inlayed texture and comely cedary-sweet wood. So long in flavour too. It’s a glorious wine of ultimate immersion in wood and fruit – so seamless and celebratory; just be set for the oak influence as distraction and champion. Overall, a wine that shows immense depth, layers and complexity. Cellar time to infinity. Glory be.

The 2004 Castille Ygay Gran Reserva Especial has a delightful bouquet with scents of leather, mocha, freshly ground coffee beans and red berry fruit. It has a perfume that encapsulates everything there is to love about classic Rioja. The palate is a little viscous on the entry with hints of dried fig and dates. It is interwoven by a crisp thread of acidity and displays fine, slightly powdery tannins. There is abundant freshness and vitality: a Rioja speaking of its place with eloquence and clarity. This paragon of classic Rioja lives up to its evocative label. Drink now-2025
