The blend this year is seventy per cent cabernet sauvignon, seventeen per cent cabernet franc and thirteen per cent merlot. It's matured for fifteen months in all-French oak, with about eighty per cent of that oak new. The recipe has worked superbly for this vintage. The winemaking team likes the cabernet to dominate this wine, so that it comes across as 'strong and long'. If that's the aim then the cabernet has done a cracking job. It has gorgeous, layered, expansive tannin and a rich flood of chocolate, blackcurrant and dried herb-like flavours. Exquisite length. Mint lifts off the nose, in a positive way. And the integration of oak is outstanding. Pyrus doesn't always light my fire ... but I really like this release. I love the fact that it's under screwcap too. Not the most concentrated wine on the market - it's juicy and medium weight, so if you're looking for a monster look elsewhere - but lovely style and length.
