The grapes for this release were sourced from Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Barossa Valley. 12 months in French (25% new) and American (11% new) oak hogsheads. Those cool bay leaf notes, that ooze of blackcurrant, that beautiful integration of olives and leaves in among the sweet rip of curranty fruit. There’s a powdery cocoa/chocolate note here but it’s so neatly integrated, and is a positive anyways. This is a lovely Bin 407, structured, fresh and, in its own way, effortless.

It’s not as opulent or immediately expressive as the thrilling 2021 vintage, but this multi-region blend – taking fruit from Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale and the Barossa – provides another very strong example of carefully defined varietal expression, and as Penfolds’ most modestly-priced elite Cabernet wine, represents good value. The nose is pretty, although the entry seems a bit thin before the fresh blackberry and sage flavours bloom in the mid-palate and persist, riding on the back of well-balanced tannins.
