Dry, Light Bodied style of Pinot NoirAny lover of Australian Pinot should taste William Downie’s evocative expressions. Made in Baw Baw Shire, in the heart of West Gippsland, his Bull Swamp Pinot Noir is made of fruit grown in volcanic soils back in 1981. There’s character in the grapes — picked from three very particular parcels — that expresses itself with beauty in this wine from one of our Pinot masters. This isn’t a light Pinot by any means. Medium to full bodied, it’s impressively structured with aromas of red cherry, juicy vine fruits, and a lick of red berries freshness. That volcanic earth comes through, too, with noticeable mineralogy, alongside savoury notes of rosemary and thyme.

Light bodied red wines have a water-light mouthfeel and light flavour impact. Often pale to light/medium in colour.
Dry wines have no trace of sweetness at all.

At first, this seemed a bit feral and funky, but it’s more about autumn with wafts of mushrooms, truffles and really fragrant, healthy compost. Pops of ironstone infiltrate the red cherry accents, some blood orange tang and zest. Quite tight and lean with finely honed tannins and life-affirming acidity, as in, it pulses with energy.
