You’ll probably get some quizzical looks when you turn up at your friend’s place with a bottle of this strangely named substance under your arm. Watch the change - the look of satisfaction, as they take their first sip and realize it’s a really good drop - you haven’t let them down. Montepulciano is one of the great Italian red varieties and seems to be settling in well here in Oz. The wine is deceptive. It starts medium bodied but you quickly realize it’s flavour-packed. At first, it’s all about red fruit, cherry skin, etc. but then the blackness kicks in - dark fruit, licorice strap and black pepper. Generously textural and smoothly long - anything from a barbecue to a ragu would be suitable.
