In 1840, Western Australia's first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe planted the original vines at Sandalford which he named after his birthplace - his father's priory in England. The 4,000 acres were bequeathed to Roe by Queen Victoria 1st for his services to the Crown in establishing the colony of Perth.
